Agamemnon, distressed by Achilles' refusal, cannot sleep and worries for the endangered Greek host.

Menelaus finds Agamemnon arming himself, and they discuss the dire state of the Greek army.

Agamemnon instructs Menelaus, then goes to Nestor's ship where the old warrior challenges him.

Agamemnon explains his fears, and Nestor agrees to help rouse the other Greek captains.

Agamemnon defends his brother, and Nestor sets out, waking the wise Ulysses for counsel.

Nestor and Ulysses find and awaken Diomed, who agrees to help rally the other chiefs.

The assembled chiefs survey the watchful guards, and Nestor asks for a volunteer to spy on the Trojans.

After Nestor details the rewards, Diomed volunteers for the spy mission and is told to choose a companion.

Diomed chooses Ulysses as his companion, and the two heroes don their armor for the night mission.

As they depart, an omen appears, and both Ulysses and Diomed pray to Pallas for her aid.

In the Trojan camp, Hector calls for a spy, and Dolon volunteers in exchange for Achilles' horses.

After Hector swears an oath, Dolon sets out but is quickly detected by Ulysses and Diomed.

The two Greek heroes pursue and capture the terrified Trojan spy, Dolon, who begs for his life.

Ulysses questions the captured Dolon, who reveals he was sent by Hector for the prize of Achilles' horses.

Dolon details the layout of the Trojan and allied forces, highlighting the newly arrived Thracians and their king, Rhesus.

Diomed executes Dolon, and after dedicating the spoils, the heroes find the sleeping Thracian camp.

Aided by Pallas, Diomed slaughters Rhesus and twelve of his men while Ulysses secures their famous horses.

The heroes escape as Apollo rouses the Trojans, and Nestor is the first to hear their approach.

The heroes arrive to great relief, recount their success, and celebrate their triumphant mission with libations.
